Reding Promenade<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our tour begins at the <strong>English Cemetery<\/strong> and continues along the <strong>Reding Promenade<\/strong>, a scenic walkway that links the slopes of <strong>Mount Gibralfaro<\/strong> with the sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This charming route is named after Swiss military officer <strong>Theodore Reding<\/strong>, a celebrated hero of the <strong>Battle of Bail\u00e9n during the Spanish War of Independence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We discover imposing buildings of the bourgeoisie of the 19th century, such as the <\/span><b>Miramar Palace<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Houses of F\u00e9lix S\u00e1enz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Palace of La Tinta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But if you\u2019d rather skip the uphill walk, <strong>you can hop on municipal bus No. 35<\/strong> from Paseo de Reding, which takes you straight to the castle entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Gibralfaro_Castle\"><\/span><b>3. Gibralfaro Castle<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gibralfaro Castle, an impressive Arab fortress built in the 14th century, is one of the most emblematic and visited places in Malaga.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you walk along the castle walls, flanked by eight towers, the most impressive is the 17-meter-high <strong>Torre Mayor<\/strong>. From the top, you&#8217;ll enjoy some of the best panoramic views of M\u00e1laga, with the Mediterranean Sea as a stunning backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the castle features <strong>two viewpoints outside its walls<\/strong>, perched on the Gibralfaro hill, offering breathtaking views over Malaga&#8217;s historic center. Its image appears on the coat of arms of Malaga, granted by the Catholic Monarchs in 1494. The name of the castle comes from the ancient lighthouse that stood at the top of the mountain, which guided navigators in the Mediterranean.    <\/span><\/i><\/pre>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The castle is located just behind the Alcazaba, with which it is connected through a corridor. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fortress has two lines of walls and several towers, among which are the Albarrana Tower (or White Tower), which preserves an ancient cistern inside, and the Pozo de Air\u00f3n, excavated in live rock with a depth of 40 meters. Bullring<\/b> <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bullring of Malaga, popularly known as &#8220;<\/span><b>La Malagueta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city. Here are held<\/span><b> unique events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from flamenco shows to theatrical performances inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, making it a must-see destination for those who enjoy art in all its forms.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next to the theater is the modern <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museosdemalaga.com\/museos\/centro-de-interpretacion-romano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-global-color-8-color\">Interpretation Center<\/mark><\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a building made of steel, wood and glass. This space offers a fascinating virtual tour of the excavations and recreates the life and customs of Roman times. It is the perfect complement to understand the historical relevance of the site.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-1f05d697\">\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should be noted that, during the Muslim period, the theater was used as a quarry to build the nearby Alcazaba, a fact that adds even more interest to its history.<\/span><\/i><\/pre>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Larios_Street\"><\/span><b>7. In addition to Picasso, in this place lived important characters such as General Riego, the writer Juan Jos\u00e9 Relosillas, the sculptor Fernando Ortiz, the painter Bernardo Ferr\u00e1ndiz and the architect Ger\u00f3nimo Cuervo, among others, who left their mark on the cultural life of the city. <\/span><\/i><\/pre>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally, the Plaza de la Merced was a public market during the fifteenth century, becoming a meeting place for the bourgeoisie of Malaga during the nineteenth century. This change of function reflects the social and cultural transformation that the city has undergone over the centuries.   <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A symbol of this era is the <strong>monolith<\/strong> that stands at the center of the square, <strong>erected in 1842 in honor of General Torrijos and his 48 companions<\/strong>, who were executed on San Andr\u00e9s Beach in 1831. Although we passed near the square a couple of times, we never actually went in, so we don\u2019t have any photos of this monument, which remains one of the square\u2019s main landmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few meters away from the Plaza de la Merced, the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teatrocervantes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-global-color-8-color\"><strong>Cervantes Theater<\/strong><\/mark><\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stands as another of the cultural emblems of the city. Inaugurated in 1870, this theater is the <\/span><b>main venue for the Malaga Film Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which makes the square an important center for cultural and artistic activities.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_Constitution_Square\"><\/span><b>12. This neighborhood, which covers about 20 hectares <\/span><b>between the Alameda Principal and the Muelle Heredia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has become a cultural and artistic reference of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its streets you can admire impressive graffiti by renowned urban artists. This neighborhood surprised us with its unique energy, its combination of urban art and cultural spaces, and its alternative atmosphere that makes it a must-see in the city. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-e17a0f46\">\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SoHo is also the epicenter of the cultural project <\/span><\/i><b><i>MAUS (M\u00e1laga Arte Urbano Soho)<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an initiative that seeks to transform the neighborhood into a huge canvas where the best street art artists in the world can capture their creations.<\/span><\/i><\/pre>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-e5effde4 gb-headline-text\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Malaga_at_Christmas_Lights_on_Calle_Larios_and_the_Giant_Christmas_Tree\"><\/span><strong>Malaga at Christmas: Lights on Calle Larios and the Giant Christmas Tree<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We haven\u2019t experienced <strong>Christmas in M\u00e1laga<\/strong> ourselves yet, but during our visit a <strong>city hall employee<\/strong> encouraged us to come back in December, explaining how magical the city becomes during the holidays. She especially recommended seeing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaga.eu\/navidad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-global-color-8-color\">giant Christmas tree in Plaza de la Constituci\u00f3n<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>, one of the city\u2019s most iconic landmarks at this time of year. The tree, often walkable inside, has become a favorite photo spot for locals and visitors alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the tree, M\u00e1laga dazzles with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/exploramalaga.com\/malagas-christmas-lights-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-global-color-8-color\">Christmas lights on Calle Larios<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>, famous across Spain for their spectacular light-and-music shows.
