the best one depends on where you live and whether you want a car:

Fly direct to Santander: the quickest option, at about two hours from London Stansted and Edinburgh all year round, plus seasonal flights from Birmingham and Manchester.

Take the ferry: an overnight cruise-ferry crossing from Plymouth (and Portsmouth) straight into Santander, ideal if you want to bring your own car.

Fly to Bilbao and travel on: more UK departure points and more frequencies, then roughly an hour and a quarter by road (about 62 miles) to Santander.

Whichever you choose, you’ll end up in the same place: a compact, GOV.UK’s Spain advice says you cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries, with exceptions such as baby food and special foods required for medical reasons (the EU’s Your Europe site explains the rule). In practice, pack dry gluten-free snacks, skip the ham-and-cheese sandwich and declare anything you’re unsure about.

The rule works in reverse too. Since April 2025, travellers cannot bring meat or dairy products from the EU into Great Britain for personal use, which includes cheese, chorizo and sandwiches containing them, and fines can reach £5,000. Enjoy Cantabrian cheeses and cured meats here rather than packing them in your suitcase, and check GOV.UK’s guidance on bringing food into Great Britain for the latest position.

On the plane or the ferry

Ryanair is a buy-on-board airline and, according to airline food guides, doesn’t take pre-ordered special meals, so assume you’ll be eating your own snacks on the flight. Solid food is generally fine through airport security, while liquids are restricted.

On the Plymouth-Santander ferry, Brittany Ferries has self-service and table-service restaurants, but gluten-free provision seems mixed. Some coeliac passengers report helpful staff and gluten-free breakfast options in passenger reviews, while others found very few choices. Spring is our favourite time, autumn brings fewer crowds and golden light, summer is the busiest (expect long queues at the Fuente Dé cable car) and winter can bring snow around Potes. Whenever you come, pack a light waterproof: green landscapes have to get their water from somewhere.

Once you’ve landed, our itineraries take the planning off your hands.
