WHO WE ARE
At Glutendtrotters, we believe that traveling and enjoying great food shouldn’t be a problem for people with celiac disease. We are a blog dedicated to making your gluten-free adventures easier, safer and more delicious.
We were born out of a shared passion: to explore the world while taking care of our health and that of our community. The team is formed by Rita, with more than 20 years of experience in tourism; Manuel, chemical engineer and technology expert; and of course, our girls, Aitana, Paola and Manuela, three other adventurers.
Together we created this space where other travelers like us and with the same restrictions can find inspiration, practical advice and recommendations.
On this page, you will discover who we are, what motivates us and how we work every day to be your ally in every trip and every recipe. We want you to feel that you are not alone in this journey, because gluten-free travel is possible and can be unforgettable.
How Glutendtrotters was born
The idea for Glutendtrotters was born at Christmas 2022. Our daughter Manuela has celiac disease. We love to travel, discover new places and live experiences, but Manuela’s disease made every trip a challenge. Despite being lovers of improvisation, we had to plan every detail regarding food, which restaurants to go to and to find out if we could find a variety of gluten-free products in that destination.
That’s when we realized we were not alone. Many people with celiac disease, like us, were looking for resources to enjoy carefree travel. That’s how Glutendtrotters was born: a project that combines our passion for traveling with celiac disease.
From that moment on, both Manuel and I have had a clear objective: to become a trusted guide for those who, like you, want to explore the world without giving up their health or the pleasures of the country’s gastronomy.
Every post, recommendation and recipe we share with you is designed for you to enjoy without fear.
Who we are
We are Rita and Manuel, a couple passionate about travel, gastronomy and continuous learning. Together we founded Glutendtrotters with the mission to make life easier for people with celiac disease and demonstrate that gluten-free travel is not only possible, but also enjoyable and enriching.
Rita
I have more than 20 years of experience in the tourism sector, especially in the hotel industry. From a very young age, and because of my parents’ business, I already ventured into this sector. I am very used to suggest routes and/or excursions to hotel guests, to recommend restaurants that I love or solve any problem they may have.
I have always loved to travel, in fact, when I was a child I was always asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said I wanted to be a customer. Today I am still pursuing that dream, although in some ways it has already been fulfilled.
I have been lucky enough to travel with my parents in European countries such as England, France, Austria, Switzerland and, of course, Italy, my father’s homeland. My parents are the ones who have passed on to me this passion for traveling, for discovering new worlds.
Now it’s Manuel and I who want to poison our family with our adventures. We’re not going to fool you, if it’s not easy to prepare a trip for two people, imagine for five. Every trip planning is a challenge, but I love to look for hotels, look at every review; look for restaurants where we can eat with peace of mind, look for the main places to visit, etc.
I enjoy the preparations as much as the trip itself and I hope that the same thing happens to you, who are reading this. I hope that with my guides you can put your fear aside and enjoy them as much as I do when I write them.
Another of my passions is cooking, and given Manuela and Manuel’s illness, I take great care in preparing gluten-free food, from starters to desserts, made with love and dedication, the essential ingredients in any recipe.
In the section dedicated to cooking you will find some of the recipes we make at home. Each and every one of them are made by us.
Manuel
Manuel is a chemical engineer and professor, among other subjects, of biology. He is in charge of the technical part of the blog, so that your experience through our website is fast and very satisfactory.
Manuel has Hashimoto’s disease, the autoimmune variant of hypothyroidism. He and Manuela share the genes for celiac disease, so he does not eat gluten either.
Out of common sense and responsible organization, the main meals at home are all gluten-free, only Aitana and Paola are allowed to take some leave at breakfast, to avoid cross-contamination risks.
Manuel has an insatiable curiosity, he reads everything he can get his hands on and, just like me, he is passionate about traveling. He loves it when we sit down together to look for a new destination, everything we want to know and the restaurants where we will enjoy our meals without any fear.
Aitana
Aitana is the oldest of my daughters and the instagramer of the family. She spends all day posing for the best photos.
As an older sister, she cares and worries about her sisters, even if that sometimes leads her to argue with them. She is like a second mother.
At Glutendtrotters, she is in charge of social media. She publishes the stories on Instagram or the Facebook posts, she keeps an eye on the design of the posts and our followers.
Aitana also likes to travel to be able to expand her photo book, what she doesn’t like so much is having to do it by plane. Fortunately, this fear is gradually disappearing, as she is more driven by the desire to see new places (she doesn’t like to repeat) than by the fear of flying.
Paola
Paola is the middle of my three daughters. If there is one thing that characterizes her, it is her innate creativity. This ability, together with her ability to abstract herself from the world and concentrate on what she likes, makes her the best candidate in the family for our recipe section.
She is passionate about television series, there is no platform that resists her. Her impatience does not allow her to watch a weekly chapter, she has to watch the entire season.
Since her earliest childhood, “Cocinilla” has been my personal assistant at Glutendtrotters, or rather, I’m her assistant for the preparation of the most delicious recipes, especially the desserts.
Another travel lover, even if we repeat destination. Her dream is to visit Vietnam and although we don’t know the reason, it is one of our first destinations on the list.
Manuela
Manuela is the youngest of the family. As you know, she has celiac disease. She was diagnosed with the disease when she was one year old. She doesn’t know what it means to eat gluten, even though in Christmas 2020 we stuffed her with roscรณn because we still didn’t know about her diagnosis.
Manuela is an earthquake. She never stops. She loves to paint, make up like her sisters, dress up and try on hundreds of outfits every day, much to her father’s despair.
Although she does not have a predominant role in the website, Manuela was the turning point that made this project take the gluten-free travel aspect.
As a curiosity, Manuela has the wanderlust of her parents and sisters. She always asks us when we are going to a new house.
All together, we form the imperfectly perfect Glutendtrotters team. We want our website to be more than just a blog: a meeting point for passionate travelers, lovers of good food and curious to find support, inspiration and solutions to enjoy a gluten-free lifestyle.
