1. Discover the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

One of the most iconic places to visit in Saint-Jean-de-Luz is, without a doubt, the church where, on June 9, 1660, Louis XIV married Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria and Bourbon. Although the Church of Saint John the Baptist existed long before the arrival of the Sun King and the daughter of Philip IV, it is believed to have been built on remnants from the 12th century.

This church has been rebuilt several times due to wars, with the current structure dating back to 1630. However, construction continued for another 50 years, meaning it was still not fully completed at the time of the famous royal wedding.

History of the Church of Saint John the Baptist

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is not only famous for the royal event, but also because this wedding marked the end of the Thirty Yearsโ€™ War between France and Spain. It was not chosen at random for an occasion that was far more political than romantic. Nearly a decade after the ceremony, the door through which the couple entered โ€” known as the ‘Louis XIV’ door in honor of this historic event โ€” was sealed as a symbol of the end of conflicts between the two countries.

We recommend this guided tour to discover the history of Saint-Jean-de-Luz with the help of an expert guide.

Architecture and Impressive Details

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is the second largest in the French Basque Country, after Bayonne Cathedral. Its size was expanded several times due to population growth, driven by the booming whale fishing industry in the region.

Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, the church showcases a style typical of the French Basque Country. Its austere exterior gives no hint of the exuberant Baroque interior that awaits inside.ย

The central nave is divided into two levels: the wooden galleries, originally reserved for men, while women sat on the ground floor. This layout was inspired by shipbuilding techniques, reflecting the seafaring origins of this charming town, and also served as a cost-effective way to expand the space and accommodate all the faithful.

One of the most impressive features inside is the carved wooden altar covered in gold, which occupies the entire back of the church. Most of the furnishings date back to the 17th century, including the pulpit and a relief of Saint Ambrose.

Listed as a historic monument since 1931, the church is now one of Saint-Jean-de-Luzโ€™s most popular tourist attractions. Its rich history and cultural significance make it a must-see stop for any visitor.

2. Louis XIV Square

In the heart of the old town lies Louis XIV Square, a lively meeting place for both locals and visitors. With its cheerful atmosphere and terrace-filled surroundings, this square is a central spot where history can be felt in every corner.

In addition to its social charm, Louis XIV Square is home to the town hall, adding an institutional touch to its already rich historical atmosphere.

3. Maison Louis XIV

Maison Louis XIV, also known as Lohobiague-Enea, is a mansion built in 1643 by wealthy shipowner Joannis de Lohobiague. This magnificent building was home to King Louis XIV for 40 days before his marriage to Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria in 1660.

Classified as a historic monument, Maison Louis XIV is a fine example of traditional Basque architecture, with influences from both French and Spanish styles. Its interior is furnished with period pieces, allowing visitors to step back in time.

Although still a private residence and owned by the same family since it was built, Maison Louis XIV opens its doors to the public. Here, you can experience nearly four centuries of history through its furniture, paintings, and memorabilia. Donโ€™t miss the chance to visit this historic treasure and immerse yourself in its rich cultural heritage.

4. Maison de l’Infante

Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria also stayed in a historic house before her wedding โ€” as one would expect. Maison de l’Infante is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, offering a fascinating glimpse into the townโ€™s past right next to the fishing port.

This impressive building is significant not only for its architecture but also for its connection to one of the most important events in the townโ€™s history.

5. The Fishing Port

The seafaring soul of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is alive in the heart of the town. Here, in the port โ€” another of its must-visit landmarks โ€” the memory of whaling and cod fishing in the waters of Newfoundland still lingers, reflected in its boats.

The bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is the perfect place to relax and take in its natural beauty. Strolling along its seawall โ€” another must-visit spot โ€” and photographing the picturesque houses on the Seafront Promenade are essential activities to complete your visit.

In addition, the Grand Hรดtel Thalasso & Spa and the Casino JOA of Saint-Jean-de-Luz will immerse you in the aristocratic elegance of a bygone era.

9. The Lighthouse of Saint-Jean-de-Luz

If youโ€™re passionate about photography, you canโ€™t miss the southern end of the Seafront Promenade, where the impressive Lighthouse of Saint-Jean-de-Luz awaits.

This historic lighthouse, designed by architect Andrรฉ Pavlovsky and built in 1936, offers spectacular views of the coast and the Atlantic Ocean. Itโ€™s the perfect spot to capture unforgettable images of the natural beauty surrounding Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

10. Maison Adam

Have you heard of macarons? Maison Adam is not just any pastry shop โ€” itโ€™s an iconic spot in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, as they were the ones who created these delicious treats for the marriage of the Sun King to Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria.

Since then, everyone who tastes this delicacy falls head over heels for it. The same family who created them still uses the original recipe from the famous wedding, made with almonds, sugar, and egg whites. And the best partโ€ฆ theyโ€™re gluten-free!

Gluten-Free Dining in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

During our visit, we enjoyed the rich local cuisine at a centrally located spot right across from the train station: Martxuka. They serve delicious breakfasts and excellent brunches from midday, with plenty of gluten-free options. The service was warm and friendly, and we had no trouble with the language, as they speak perfect Spanish. What more could you ask for?

In the center of the cafรฉ, thereโ€™s a dedicated play area to keep the little ones entertained. They also sell handcrafted products made by local artisans.

11. La Grand Plage

We couldnโ€™t leave without visiting one of the main attractions of this charming fishing town. Among the best things to do in Saint-Jean-de-Luz is to simply enjoy its breathtaking coastline. Although weโ€™re lucky enough to have stunning beaches all year round, we canโ€™t help but admire the beauty of the shores along this gorgeous stretch of coast.

Right in the city center lies La Grande Plage. This long stretch of sand is perfect for enjoying with the family, whether sunbathing or playing in the sea. And if you prefer another activity, you can stroll along the Seafront Promenade that runs alongside it, admiring the picturesque houses that line the shore and the spectacular views.

12. Erromardie Beachie

Just a few kilometers from the center, youโ€™ll find some of the most beautiful beaches in Saint-Jean-de-Luz: Erromardie, Lafitรฉnia โ€”a paradise for surfersโ€”, Mayarco, and Senix.

You can get there by car or take the scenic coastal path, enjoying nature and panoramic views along the way.

Water Activities in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz offers a wide variety of water activities, from surfing to paddleboarding. If youโ€™re a water lover, youโ€™ll find plenty of ways to enjoy the sea actively โ€” and for a truly unforgettable experience, book this scenic Basque Country boat tour along the coast and see the beauty of Saint-Jean-de-Luz from the water here.

Find the Best Places to Park in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

One of our main worries when traveling by car is finding a good place to park so we can enjoy our destination with peace of mind. If this is something that concerns you, rest assured โ€” Saint-Jean-de-Luz offers plenty of stress-free parking options.

Aparcamientos en el Centro y Cerca del Mar

Saint-Jean-de-Luz has several parking areas, both in the town center and near the sea. Some zones have time limits, but we found the prices to be quite high, which made it difficult to visit the most iconic spots at a relaxed pace.

We chose an easily accessible underground car park close to all the main attractions, which allowed us to explore without worries โ€” and the price wasnโ€™t much different from what we pay in our own city.

Parking Alternatives

We werenโ€™t lucky enough to find a free parking spot. And if youโ€™d rather avoid any hassle, you can always consider arriving by train if thereโ€™s a station near your accommodation.

Things to See Near Saint-Jean-de-Luz

During our visit to the French Basque coast, we had the chance to explore several nearby towns, each with its own personality and plenty of tourist attractions. Here are some of our favorites โ€” highly recommended:

Biarritz

Although Saint-Jean-de-Luz is very close to Biarritz, the two French towns have very different atmospheres. We encourage you to visit both.

Donโ€™t miss the Seafront Promenade in Biarritz, home to two of its main landmarks: the Casino and the Hotel du Palais, built by Emperor Napoleon III to host his wife, Eugรฉnie de Montijo. You can also visit the islet of the Rock of the Virgin, connected to the mainland by a small iron footbridge.

Hendaye

In the French Basque Country, just a short distance from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, lies Hendaye. This town also boasts a rich maritime history and an impressive beach thatโ€™s a paradise for surfers. Hendaye is also home to remarkable landmarks such as the Abbadia Castle, a neo-Gothic mansion built by scientist Antoine dโ€™Abbadie, and a charming old town with picturesque streets and traditional buildings.

Fuenterrabรญa

Located just 20 kilometers from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, on the other side of the French-Spanish border by the mouth of the Bidasoa River, Hondarribia (Fuenterrabรญa) is one of the most charming towns on the Basque coast. Its original core, with brightly painted houses, sits atop a hill and is surrounded by ancient walls. La Marina, once a fishermenโ€™s quarter, has become one of the most sought-after residential areas in the Basque Country and one of its top holiday destinations.
