Touring the charms of Laguardia is an experience that can be enjoyed in half a day, although the town is perfect for a weekend getaway. If you want to delve into its fascinating history and discover all of its most emblematic corners. In addition, the nearby pictures que villages are also worth your attention and perfectly complement your visit.
1. A Walk Along Laguardiaโs Ancient Wall
The first stop on our tour of the places to see in Laguardia leads us directly to its imposing wall, a fortification built in the thirteenth century that surrounds the old town. Crossing its sandstone walls is like traveling back in time: we enter a perfectly preserved medieval quarter, with its original layout and two of its towers, now converted into bell towers.
Laguardia is still an authentic fortified town. A large part of its walls and access gates remain in excellent condition, inviting us to explore five historic entrances to the town: the Pรกganos Gate, to the west; the Mercadal Gate, to the south; the San Juan Gate, to the southeast; the Santa Engracia Gate, to the northeast; and the emblematic Carnicerรญas Gate, to the east.
The latter, also known as the New Gate, was not opened until the 15th century and has a deep symbolism. Next to it, a plaque inscribed with the words: “Peace to those who come. Health to those who dwell. Happiness to those who march.”welcomes all visitors. This simple and emotional message makes the access to Laguardia a unique experience.
2. Streets with History
Walking through the cobbled streets of LaguardiaIn the middle of a picturesque setting where time seems to have stopped, one is immersed in a picturesque scenery. As you walk down this historic street, you’ll come across a series of impressive palatial houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, each adorned with the heraldic coats of arms of the townโs most influential families.
In one of these majestic houses is the tourist office, an ideal place to start your visit and learn more about the secrets of Laguardia. Here, you will not only get useful information, but you can also admire a beautiful fretwork that adds a touch of distinction to the place.

Laguardia, with its orderly structure, is articulated mainly in three parallel streets: the Main Street, the Paganos Street and Santa Engracia Street connected by narrow perpendicular streets. As you walk along them, you will be amazed by the variety of architectural styles that stand on both sides: medieval, Renaissance, baroque and neoclassical buildings that tell stories of centuries past.
Personally, this charming labyrinth of narrow streets and historic buildings reminds us a bit of our beloved Santillana de Mar. Santillana del Mar with that same magical atmosphere that invites you to get lost in its corners and immerse yourself in its rich history.
3. Plaza Mayor: The charming heart of Laguardia.
Crossing the threshold of the New Gate, you step into the Plaza Mayorโthe vibrant heart of Laguardia. This beautiful arcaded square is a true showcase of the townโs rich history and architecture.
On the main side of the square stands the 19th-century town hall, with the coat of arms of Laguardia and a unique clock with dancing figures on its faรงade. Although itโs a modern addition (built in 1998), this charming clock has become one of the townโs most beloved icons.
Every day at 12:00, 14:00, 17:00, and 20:00, the small figuresโrepresenting traditional characters from the San Juan festivities, including the dantzaris and the cachimorroโcome to life and dance to the rhythm of festive music. A delightful performance you wonโt want to miss.
On one side of the square stands the Old City Hall, a Renaissance-style building dating back to the 16th century thatโs well worth a closer look. Its faรงade features a fascinating plaque displaying the old official units of measurementโsuch as the rod, the half rod, the tile, and the brickโused to regulate trade and prevent fraud. At the top, youโll see the imperial coat of arms of Charles V, a detail that evokes the townโs proud and historic past.
4. Church of Santa Marรญa de los Reyes
Strolling from the town hall along Santa Engracia street, you will reach the Plaza del Gaitero, a charming corner of Laguardia where you will find one of its most important treasures: the Church of Santa Marรญa de los Reyes.
Its construction began in the twelfth century and was completed in the sixteenth century, which gives it a great architectural richness, reflection of several periods. Although the interior of the church is cozy and elegant, what really catches the eye is its Gothic doorway, a polychrome portico that stands out among the few of its kind in Spain.
The portico is full of fascinating details, with images that narrate the life of the Virgin. The carvings on the jambs represent the twelve Apostles, while on the mullion is the sculpture of Santa Maria de los Reyes.
The tympanum is divided into three sections, with reliefs illustrating episodes from the life of the Virgin, a masterpiece that has survived to the present day thanks to the preservation brought about by the closing of the portico in the 16th century.
Inside, the main altarpiece, an impressive work of Juan de Bascardo dating from the seventeenth century, is a sublime example of baroque art.
To visit the church, it is necessary to contact the tourist office in advance (Tel.: 945 60 08 45), which guarantees a more intimate and enriching experience when exploring this very special monument.
5. Piper’s Square
Plaza del Gaitero is without a doubt one of the most unique and charming squares in Laguardiaโa place steeped in history and tradition.
In this town of the Rioja Alavesa, the bagpipes and the dulzaina take center stage during local festivities. Traditional dances like the Dance of the Arches, the Chulalai, the Troqueados of San Juan Degollao, or the Tree Dance, among others, bring the streets to life with music and movement. Every May, Piperโs Day is celebrated with concerts, contests, morning reveilles, and lively paradesโan event that pays tribute to local music and the musicians who keep it alive.
It is not surprising, therefore, that next to the Church of Santa Maria tribute has been paid to the musicians with this square. However, what really stands out is the sculptural work designed by the artist from Vitoria. Koko Rico which pays tribute to “travelers”. On two steel platforms, covered with feet, boots, sandals, shoes, bags and bronze suitcases, the sculptor invites you to reflect on the roads traveled and the traces we leave behind.
For us at Glutendtrotters this sculpture has a special value, as we feel deeply honored to represent those who, like us, travel the world with a curious eye and a spirit of adventure.

From the 15th century until the 1980s, this house has witnessed uninterrupted winemaking, and even today it is still registered as a winery in the Rioja Control Board. Its original production structure has been preserved over the centuries.

Visiting these churches is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Laguardia, as they are a testimony to centuries of history and art.
The Church of San Juan Bautista stands out because of its south faรงade known as the “of the grandparents”.which is a beautiful example of Gothic style. This doorway is adorned with columns depicting the Annunciation, and its baroque altarpiece is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. At the foot of the church, you will find the chapel of Pilar, built in baroque style after the destruction of an old Gothic doorway.
The bell tower of the church, originally a gate of the medieval wall, was renovated in the sixteenth century and served as a defense tower on the south side of the village.

One of the most ancient and fascinating places in Laguardia Laguardia is the Celtiberian Pond of the Barbacana an impressive work of hydraulic engineering built 2,100 years ago. 2,100 years agoyears ago, in the Iron Age. This pond, which has a capacity for storing 300,000 liters of wateris the largest of its kind found in Europe to date. Its location, on the south side of the hill where the medieval village is located, takes advantage of a nearby spring to collect and store water.
