Things to do in Aveiro in 1 day?
1. BEIRA MAR DISTRICT
The heart of Aveiro beats in this district. With its deep maritime heritage and winding canals, it attracts visitors from all over the world. Colorful houses intermingle with majestic buildings, creating an unparalleled urban landscape.
It is in Beira Mar where the greatest concentration of modernist architecture in Aveiro is found, thus making it the museum-city of Modernism in Portugal.

The Praça do Peixe, with its bustling fish market, is the ideal starting point to explore the narrow streets full of history and charm.
2. HISTORIC CENTER
The Republic Square (Praça da República), in the heart of Aveiro, is a testament to the city’s past splendor.
Surrounded by iconic buildings like the Aveirense Theater and the City Hall, this square is bustling with activity.
You cannot miss the nearby Igreja da Misericórdia, completed in 1653, which stands out for its facade adorned with tiles (azulejos) and its interior filled with sacred art.

3. MOLICEIRO BOAT RIDE
These boats, formerly used to transport seaweed, now offer a unique perspective of the city.

During the approximately one-hour tour, you can admire the Art Nouveau style architectural gems of the historic center, the train station of Aveiro with its traditional Portuguese tiles, the picturesque fishermen’s neighborhood, the iconic salt pans, and the imposing terracotta building of the Old Jerónimo Pereira Campos Factory, which formerly housed a ceramics factory and today is the Congress Center.
4. AVEIRO MUSEUM
Located in the Convent of Jesus, this museum is a window into Aveiro’s past. Here, you can discover the rich history of the city.
The museum building, with its cloister and chapels, is a masterpiece in itself. But the highlight is, without a doubt, the Church of Jesus, with its impressive gilded carvings and traditional tiles.
5. AVEIRO CATHEDRAL
This cathedral, also known as the Parish Church of Our Lady of Glory, is a perfect combination of Gothic and Baroque styles.
A historical monument dating back to 1423.

Its exterior, with its magnificent portal and Solomonic columns, is just a prelude to the wonders it houses inside.
To conclude your visit, don’t forget to take a photo at the I LOVE AVEIRO STAIRS and add a ribbon to the FRIENDSHIP RIBBON BRIDGE (PONTE LAÇOS DE AMIZADE).
