At home, Paola is the one who runs the show when it comes to dessert. She loves baking, and for a while now she’s made it her mission to keep everything she makes gluten-free and free from added sugar — sweetening instead with ripe banana, dates, or honey, depending on the recipe. This chocolate orange yogurt bark is one of her latest creations.

It’s a cold, crunchy-creamy slab of dark chocolate and yogurt, topped with fresh fruit and broken into rough pieces once it’s frozen solid. No oven, no added sugar, no fuss — just three ingredients and a bit of patience while the freezer does its thing.

Ingredients for gluten-free yogurt bark

  • 1 plain coconut yogurt (or whichever yogurt you like — Greek, sheep’s milk, plant-based…)
  • 1 bar of dark chocolate with no added sugar, at least 82-85% cocoa (check that it’s labeled gluten-free, like the one we used)
  • 1 piece of fruit of your choice (orange, in this recipe)

How to make yogurt bark, step by step

  • Spread the yogurt: line a tray or plate with parchment paper and spread the yogurt over it with the back of a spoon, in a thin, even layer.
  • Melt the chocolate: while you spread the yogurt, melt the chocolate bar in a double boiler (bain-marie), stirring occasionally.
  • Pour the chocolate over the yogurt: pour the melted chocolate over the yogurt and spread it quickly with a spoon, before it cools — the yogurt’s own chill helps the chocolate set fast, giving it that marbled look.
  • Add the fruit: chop your piece of fruit (orange, here) and scatter it over the top.
  • Freeze: put the tray in the freezer and leave it overnight.
  • Break it up: the next day, peel off the parchment carefully and break the bark into rough pieces with your hands or a knife.

Tips and variations

  • Swap the fruit with the seasons: strawberries, kiwi, mango, or sliced banana all work just as well as orange.
  • For extra crunch, scatter a few chopped almonds or hazelnuts over the fruit before freezing.
  • Keep it in the freezer, in an airtight container or a resealable bag, and only take it out a few minutes before eating — it softens fast at room temperature.
  • Skip any sweetened chocolate if you want to keep this sugar-free: the higher the cocoa percentage, the less sweet and more intense the flavor.

Gluten-free yogurt bark: safe for celiacs, too

This recipe is naturally gluten-free — none of the yogurt, dark chocolate, or fruit contains gluten on its own. Still, our standard advice at Glutendtrotters applies here too: check the chocolate’s label. Not every dark chocolate bar carries a certified gluten-free seal, since some are made in facilities that also handle wheat or other gluten-containing grains. Look for one that’s certified, like the one we used here.

And that’s it — your chocolate orange yogurt bark is ready: cold, sugar-free, gluten-free, and just the thing when you want something sweet without the guilt. It’s one of those recipes Paola can make with her eyes closed, and it barely lasts five minutes once it’s out of the freezer at home. Let us know in the comments which fruit you went with!

Frequently asked questions about yogurt bark

How long does yogurt bark need to freeze?

Overnight is best — at least 6-8 hours — so it’s fully set and breaks into clean pieces.

Can I use a different yogurt instead of coconut?

Yes, any plain yogurt works: Greek, sheep’s milk, or a plant-based alternative. The thicker the yogurt, the easier it is to spread evenly.

Can I swap the orange for another fruit?

Definitely. Sliced strawberries, kiwi, mango, or banana all work well — use whatever you like or whatever’s in season.

Is this recipe safe for celiacs?

Yes, as long as the chocolate you use is certified gluten-free. The yogurt, dark chocolate, and fruit are naturally gluten-free, but it’s worth checking the label for cross-contamination risk.

How do you store it once it’s made?

In the freezer, in an airtight container or resealable bag. Take it out just a few minutes before eating, since it softens quickly at room temperature.
