An authentic venue in every sense, from its decor to its food. Located in the heart of Potes, it transports you back in time with its unique style.

The service is excellent, making it an ideal place to eat gluten‑free right in the centre of Liébana; the waiters have a solid understanding of cross‑contamination.

We highly recommend the Liébana stew (cocido lebaniego). Almost the entire menu is adaptable to gluten‑free, including some desserts, and they also offer gluten‑free bread.

Make the most of your visit by taking a guided tour of Potes, a trip to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, or, if you love hiking, a trek into the Picos de Europa.

Restaurante Conde

It is a small restaurant with a cozy rear terrace. The menu includes many dishes that can be adapted to be gluten‑free, and we especially recommend the delicious “sartenes” (skillet dishes). They also offer gluten‑free beer, which is always a welcome plus.

Although tables cannot be reserved, the wait is well worth it. The waiters were very attentive throughout and we especially appreciated that they told us from the start that our food would take a bit longer, as they were taking special care to avoid any possible cross‑contamination. That detail gave us a lot of reassurance and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which restaurants are ACECAN-certified in Cantabria?

In Santander, the ACECAN-certified restaurants we recommend are Nachos & Co, Abra Sardinero, Asador Montaña, La Ventana and Ágave Azul. Outside the capital, the ACECAN seal is also held by El Galeón by Agus y Nuria, La Villa (Santillana del Mar), La Partera, Ágave Azul (Comillas) and Dulce y Saladito (Somo).

What does it mean for a restaurant to have ACECAN certification?

ACECAN certification (from the Cantabria Celiac Association) means the establishment has been assessed by the association and follows specific handling protocols to prevent cross-contamination with gluten, adding an extra layer of safety for celiac diners.

Is it safe to eat out in Cantabria if I’m celiac?

Yes. Cantabria has a growing number of certified restaurants, plus others that, without an official seal, offer adapted gluten-free options and informed staff. We still recommend confirming gluten-free availability when booking and checking the FACE app for more options.

Where can I find more gluten-free restaurants in Cantabria beyond this list?

You can check the FACE app (Federación de Asociaciones de Celíacos de España) and ACECAN itself, both of which keep listings of recommended establishments across the region.

What are the best areas to eat gluten-free in Cantabria?

Santander has the largest certified offering, but there are also good options in Santillana del Mar, Comillas, Somo, Potes and Castro Urdiales, among other towns covered in this guide.

Where can I eat gluten-free in Comillas?

In Comillas you can eat at Ágave Azul, the ACECAN-certified Mexican restaurant on the Plaza de la Constitución. If you prefer traditional Cantabrian cooking, Gurea Restaurante does not hold the ACECAN seal, but according to the Celicidad directory it adapts several dishes (including the cachopo) and offers gluten-free beer and desserts, although it has no gluten-free bread. Always let them know when you book.
