This post is the account of that search, an essential guide to traveling gluten-free in Marrakech, where tradition meets inclusivity, making every meal a celebration accessible to all.
Marrakesh has completely bewitched us, becoming an essential destination on our list. Its hustle and bustle, a spectacle of colors and fragrances, marks the perfect start to an adventure in Africa. Before delving deep into its culture, we want to share a brief summary of Moroccan gastronomy, a feast for the senses.
Although finding gluten-free options has been a challenge, we have discovered traditional dishes suitable for celiacs:
Tagine: A captivating stew, whether chicken or lamb, served in a traditional deep clay dish. The lamb tagine with prunes is simply sublime, a true culinary gem that you cannot miss.
Hummus: A chickpea-based dip with lemon juice, tahini, and olive oil, irresistibly delicious.
Baba Ganoush: Smooth eggplant dip, ideal to enjoy as an appetizer.
Kefta: Juicy spiced minced meat skewers, a delicacy that defines Moroccan street food.

Unfortunately, there are also dishes that contain gluten:
Couscous: This wheat semolina grain is enjoyed accompanied by juicy meat and a variety of vegetables, a Moroccan classic par excellence.
Pastilla: Exquisite layers of phyllo pastry filled with meat and almonds, baked to perfection and sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar, a feast for the senses.
Harira: A soup rich in tomatoes, lentils, chickpeas, and meat, seasoned with cilantro and lemon. Sometimes it may contain noodles or wheat flour as a thickener.
Moroccan bread (Khobz): Present in almost every meal, made with wheat flour.
Moroccan sweets: With a generous touch of sugar and garnished with nuts, these sweets are a temptation at every turn in the city.

Gluten-Free Restaurants in Marrakesh
Although traveling here gluten-free can seem challenging due to the lack of awareness about celiac disease, the city is home to several restaurants that offer gluten-free options, ensuring a rich and worry-free culinary experience.
Discover our first culinary success in Marrakech, located between the vibrant Jemaa El-Fna square and the souk. Upon our afternoon arrival, without a prior reservation, we were quickly seated despite the lively atmosphere. The food, simply exquisite, lived up to the bustle. Although the stairs to the top floor present a challenge due to their narrowness and incline, especially for people with reduced mobility or families with children, the panoramic views of the square more than make up for the effort. They have a variety of gluten-free dishes, including desserts.
This restaurant has earned its place as one of the undisputed favorites in Marrakech, standing out both for its hospitality and its gastronomic offerings. Despite an unexpected change of plans, from two to six diners, the floor manager welcomed us with a smile, ensuring a memorable experience.
Located in the heart of the souk and with a modern design that includes a shop, it attracts numerous visitors. Its menu, rich in traditional dishes adapted to be gluten-free, includes a unique version of couscous, living up to its reputation with generous portions and authentic flavors. We advise you to book well in advance (they require a credit card when booking).
Discover “The Eden of Marrakech“, a culinary oasis hidden behind a modest facade, located in a quiet corner of the city. Despite the difficulties in arriving due to heavy rain, this place surprises with an open-air dining area in a spectacular natural setting. Although weather conditions limited us to a cozy, charmingly decorated lounge, the experience was unforgettable thanks to a delicious gastronomic offering, including various gluten-free options even for dessert. We advise booking in advance (they require a credit card for the reservation).

TAJ’IN DARNA
This restaurant, located in the iconic Jemaa El-Fna square, offers unbeatable views thanks to its spacious and pleasant terrace, ideal for delighting in both the food and the panoramic view. The staff, extremely attentive, gave us detailed guidance on the gluten-free options available on their menu. We especially highlight the Baba Ganoush, the flavor of which was exceptional.

Committed to celebrating our stay in Marrakesh, we found the ideal spot near Jamaa El-Fna square. Not only did we enjoy gluten-free options, but we also enjoyed magnificent henna tattoos. This restaurant fuses culinary and body art masterfully. We especially want to highlight the kindness and patience of the tattoo artists, who managed to keep everyone, even Manuela, calm while we were getting matching tattoos, making our visit truly memorable.

Our journey in Marrakesh, although intense and enriching, was too short to cover all the gluten-free restaurants we had on our list. It is clear that Marrakech awaits us for a future visit, where we will continue exploring its culinary delights. In the meantime, if you plan to venture there before us, here are some suggestions to start your own gluten-free gastronomic exploration.
We recommend having a freshly squeezed orange juice in Jemaa El-Fna square. Just be sure they don’t mix it with water.
This restaurant deserves a special mention for its exceptional customer service. Despite having to cancel our reservation due to bad weather, they responded with great kindness. On our next visit to the city, it will be our first choice, as we are eager to enjoy their accommodating gluten-free offerings. This commitment to satisfaction and culinary accessibility marks it as a must-visit destination for those looking for gluten-free options in Marrakech. We advise you to book via email.
This restaurant in Gueliz stands out for its exceptional handling of gluten-free needs, offering a safe and delicious culinary experience. With a chef who personally takes orders, they ensure service adapted to each client. In addition, the welcoming atmosphere and quality service are constantly praised by visitors, making this place a perfect choice for those looking for a memorable meal in Marrakech.
We discovered three culinary gems in Marrakesh online thanks to the recommendations of some visitors: one near the vibrant Jemaa El Fna square, another next to the historic Saadian Tombs (temporarily closed), and the last in Kasbah. Although we have not visited these places personally, online reviews highlight their pleasant atmosphere, outstanding service, and, crucially, the gluten-free options clearly marked on the menu. These locations are praised as points of interest for those exploring the city’s main attractions.
Choosing a Riad for accommodation is an essential tip for traveling to Marrakesh, not only for its proximity to tourist sites but also for the warmth and hospitality it offers. In our experience, Riad Assou stood out for its central location, excellent ratings, and exceptional service that included carefully prepared gluten-free breakfasts.
Our experience at the Riad, enriched by personalized attention dedicated to meeting our dietary preferences, underscores Morocco’s unique hospitality. The possibility of enjoying not only adapted breakfasts but also exquisite meals on the rooftop after our excursions added a special charm to our stay, enhancing our gluten-free culinary adventure in Marrakech. This attentive approach towards guests ensures a memorable and genuine experience, reflecting Moroccan warmth.
