Comparte en tus Redes Sociales

Marrakech captivates you from the moment you step foot in its Medina. But if there’s one thing that makes a trip to this Moroccan city even more special, it’s how much you can explore in its surroundings. Day trips from Marrakesh allow you to discover impressive waterfalls, desert landscapes, charming Berber villages, or bohemian coastal towns… all without venturing too far.

In this article, I propose a selection of the best day trips from Marrakesh, all well-organized and designed for you to enjoy unique experiences without needing to stay overnight. And as a perfect finale, a free walking tour of Marrakesh to start or end your trip with an authentic local perspective.

💡Glutendtrotter Tip: Before choosing your day trip, we recommend reading our post on essential tips for traveling to Marrakesh and the 3-day Marrakesh guide. This will help you organize your trip better.

1. Ouzoud Waterfalls Excursion

👉 Book here

This is one of the most popular getaways, and for good reason. The Ouzoud Waterfalls, located in the Middle Atlas mountains, cascade from over 100 meters high, forming a breathtaking landscape filled with lush vegetation and small trails.

During the journey, you’ll see olive groves, small Berber villages, and you might even encounter the famous monkeys that live in the area. You can climb to the highest viewpoints, take a boat ride, or enjoy a meal by the river with the waterfalls as your backdrop. It’s a perfect blend of nature, relaxation, and a touch of adventure.

2. Essaouira Excursion

👉 Book here

Essaouira is a gem on the Atlantic coast. This city, with its whitewashed houses and blue doors, has a relaxed and artistic vibe that contrasts with the intensity of Marrakech. Its ramparts, its UNESCO World Heritage medina, and its fishing port give it a unique character.

You’ll have time to stroll along the beach, visit local markets, explore art galleries, or eat fresh grilled fish by the sea. It’s an ideal getaway if you’re craving the ocean, culture, and a salty breath of fresh air.

3. Ourika Valley Excursion

👉 Book here

This green valley at the foot of the High Atlas is a favorite route for locals. Less than an hour from Marrakech, you’ll find mountains, rivers, terraced fields, and houses clinging to the hillsides. During the excursion, you can visit a traditional market, discover a Berber house, and hike (if you’re up for it) to the Setti Fatma waterfalls.

It’s an ideal plan if you’re looking for a peaceful, natural experience with a taste of Moroccan rural culture. Wear comfortable shoes!

4. Three Valleys Tour

👉 Book here

This tour is perfect for those who want to delve into the heart of the High Atlas and enjoy an authentic and comprehensive experience. The route begins with a stop at Lake Lalla Takerkoust, where you’ll enjoy a camel ride and Moroccan tea with bread, olive oil, and honey against a postcard-perfect landscape.

Afterward, you’ll visit villages like Azrou, a World Heritage site, and the Amizmiz Valley, where, if it’s market day (Tuesday or Saturday), you can browse stalls of handicrafts and local products. The tour includes a one-and-a-half-hour hike along mountain trails, with the possibility of swimming in waterfalls if the weather permits.

To refuel, you’ll savor a traditional meal in a Berber home: tagines, couscous, salads, and tea served with local hospitality. After nine hours of cultural and natural immersion, you’ll return to Marrakech with the feeling of having experienced a more authentic Morocco.

5. Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou Excursion

A route for cinephiles and history lovers. You’ll cross the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass to reach Ait Ben Haddou, an adobe fortress that has served as a setting for films like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and series like Game of Thrones.

Afterward, you’ll visit Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” with its film studios and the impressive Kasbah of Taourirt. It’s one of the longest excursions, but also one of the most comprehensive.

6. Overnight in the Agafay Desert

👉 Book here

Just an hour from Marrakech, the Agafay Desert offers an unforgettable experience. This getaway includes transfer to a luxury tented camp in the heart of nature, where you’ll be greeted with welcome tea and spectacular views of the arid Atlas landscape.

You can choose between a camel ride or simply relaxing and watching the sunset. The night includes a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars —with tagines, couscous, salads, and dessert— and a show with Gnawa music, belly dancing, and fire-eaters around the bonfire.

Afterward, you’ll sleep in a tent under the starry desert sky. At dawn, you’ll enjoy a Berber breakfast before returning to Marrakech with a magical feeling that’s hard to forget.

If you have a dietary restriction, as is our case, you can notify it during the reservation. Vegetarian and celiac-friendly options are available.

This free guided walk (with voluntary payment) is ideal for getting an initial feel for Marrakech. For about two hours, you’ll explore the main sights of the historic center: Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia Mosque, the souk, the city walls, and other vibrant and historic spots.

Your guide will explain local customs, offer practical tips, and share anecdotes not found in guidebooks. Perfect to do on your first day to get your bearings with confidence.

Traveler Tip

If it’s your first time in Marrakech, I recommend combining a day in the city (with the free tour or a private tour) and at least one of the day trips from Marrakech. If you love the sea, Essaouira is an ideal choice. Prefer mountains? The Three Valleys tour will surprise you. And if you’re looking for something unique, the Agafay Desert will enchant you.

And remember: wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, something warm for the mountains, and a huge desire to be amazed. Morocco is a destination to be experienced with all five senses.

And you, do you already know which excursion you’ll choose?

As you can see, Marrakech is much more than just its Medina. Just a few kilometers away, unique landscapes, soulful villages, the desert, the sea, and countless experiences await to make your trip unforgettable. From camel rides to hidden waterfalls or Berber markets, there’s an excursion for every type of traveler.
