Exploring Marrakesh has been the latest and most fascinating Glutendtrotters adventure. This city, with its vibrant chaos and rich culture, has offered us an unparalleled experience—so impactful that we felt compelled to share our essential tips for traveling to Marrakech as soon as we set foot back home. Our journey was full of discoveries and lessons that we want you to experience for yourself.
Despite the influx of tourism, Marrakesh has the magic of transporting you to bygone eras just by wandering through the narrow streets of its Medina, where its authenticity is preserved, especially once you move away from the most crowded areas. The city unfolds with a unique charm that captivates every visitor.
To ensure your first trip to this enchanting destination is unforgettable, we have prepared a list of essential tips for visiting Marrakesh. Our goal is for your experience to be as enriching as ours, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the best this place has to offer.
Open Your Mind
Changing your perspective is essential, in our experience. It is time to ‘switch gears’, to turn that Western mindset knob 180 degrees, and leave behind any prejudices.
Marrakech is a gem in the heart of Africa, a city overflowing with beauty and culture. To truly immerse yourself in everything it has to offer, from its rich traditions to its exquisite gastronomy, it is crucial to open your mind. Set aside what you thought you knew and get ready to embrace a new way of seeing and living life. We are sure this adventure will profoundly transform your outlook on life.

Choosing the Ideal Season to Explore Marrakech
Although we would love to say that any time is perfect for discovering Marrakesh, climatic reality points us toward more specific periods.
The high temperatures of the summer months lead us to recommend planning your getaway during the spring or autumn. These seasons offer a milder climate, ideal for fully enjoying your experience, unless you are accustomed to extreme heat.
In addition, here are some tips for traveling to Marrakesh: plan your visits to the markets and tourist sites early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the hottest hours of the day.
The winter also presents itself as an attractive option, especially if you are inclined toward snow sports. Just an hour away from the vibrant Medina, you will find accessible Moroccan ski slopes.
Furthermore, this period allows you to explore the most iconic monuments of Marrakech without the usual tourist crowds, in a relatively mild climate compared to other latitudes.

Our first adventure coincided with Ramadan, a period that transforms the city into a stage of deep cultural tradition. During this month, Muslim practices impose daytime restrictions on eating, drinking, smoking, and more, which could pose a challenge for some travelers.
However, far from being an inconvenience, this experience gave us a unique perspective on the meaning of Ramadan and a deeper immersion into Muslim culture, despite the adjustments in shop and restaurant hours.
Given that Ramadan is governed by the lunar calendar, the dates change annually, so we suggest checking them online before planning your trip.

What Documentation You Need for Your Trip to Marrakesh
Traveling to Marrakesh involves fairly straightforward documentation preparation. The essential thing you must have is a valid passport, with a minimum validity of six months before its expiration date.
This will be stamped both upon entering and leaving the country, officially marking your adventure in Morocco. Additionally, it is important to keep in mind some tips for traveling to Marrakesh: make sure to carry a copy of your passport and other important documents, such as travel insurance and accommodation confirmation.
In our experience, as a “binuclear” family, we decided to bring both family record books in anticipation of any requirements. However, at no time were we asked for this additional documentation.

And, as you already know our tendency to be cautious, we left nothing to chance and brought certified copies of our passports. Although losing your passport doesn’t allow you to leave the country immediately, having these copies significantly facilitates the process of resolving this setback in the most agile and efficient way possible.
The Importance of Travel Insurance for Marrakesh
When planning your adventure to Marrakesh, it is crucial to remember that, as it is outside Europe, our European Health Insurance Card does not offer coverage. For this reason, we consider it essential to contract medical travel insurance that comprehensively covers your stay in Morocco. We recommend this travel insurance; you will get a 5% discount if you contract it with Glutendtrotters.
Also, do not forget these tips for traveling to Marrakech: carry a basic first aid kit with medications and supplies, and be sure to know the location of the hospitals and clinics near your accommodation.
Good travel insurance provides the security of not having to pay large amounts of money in any unforeseen situation or medical emergency. The peace of mind this provides, we believe, is well worth the investment. Ensuring that you are fully covered is an essential step in preparing for your trip, thereby guaranteeing that you can enjoy your experience in Marrakech with as much peace of mind as possible.

Navigating the Language Barrier in Marrakesh
If you are worried that the language might be an obstacle on your trip to Marrakech, let us put those doubts to rest. The inhabitants of Morocco are true polyglots. We dare say that almost everyone speaks both French and Arabic, and a significant number also master English and Spanish.
Their communication skills go beyond the everyday; they actively seek to make you feel welcome and, of course, seize any opportunity to offer you their products and services. Walking through the narrow streets and souks, you will be surprised at how they will try to capture your attention in various languages, striving to find yours.
The friendliness and the eagerness to integrate of the Moroccans are exceptional. We are sure that any shyness will quickly fade, allowing you to enjoy every moment. In Marrakesh, language will never be a barrier, but rather a door to new experiences and connections.
Determining the Ideal Duration of Your Trip to Marrakesh
When planning your getaway to Marrakesh, especially if traveling with family, it is crucial to be realistic with your itinerary. In our experience, four nights were enough, although we must admit that the rain limited our activities during the first two days, reducing our city tour by half. Based on this, we estimate that three full days are the minimum necessary to explore the highlights of Marrakech.

If you have in mind to discover nearby places, be prepared to add some extra daysto your trip. Marrakesh serves as a starting point for exciting excursions to the desert, Essaouira, or the impressive Ouzoud Waterfalls, among other destinations.

However, our main recommendation is to maintain flexibility. Sometimes factors outside our control can change our initial plans. Don’t let these unforeseen events cloud your experience. Use your sense of humor and adapt your plans to the new circumstances. Remember, if something remains to be done, you can always plan a new visit.
Experience the Magic of Marrakesh: Stay in a Riad
Staying in a Riad during your visit to Marrakesh will transform your travel experience, just as it did ours. We strongly encourage you to choose one within the Medina, which will place you incredibly close to the most fascinating places in the city.
The word “riad” means paradise, and truly, this definition comes to life once you cross its doors. From the outside, these traditional Moroccan houses with central courtyards may seem modest, but their interior is a display of beauty and unparalleled hospitality.
Our Riad offered friendly and familiar service, standing out for its delicious and abundant breakfasts. From the moment they welcomed us with a welcome tea on the rooftop, we knew our stay would be memorable.

Marrakesh has several beautiful areas to stay in, but for a total immersion in the local culture, a Riad managed by local families is unbeatable. Here, the day starts with the rooster crowing, and you won’t miss any of the calls to prayer, creating an authentically Moroccan atmosphere where you will feel cared for and welcome at all times.
We chose a very affordable Riad, although there are options for all tastes, including some more luxurious ones. And if you visit during the summer, consider a Riad with a pool to cool off from the high temperatures.
Transportation Options in Marrakesh
Exploring Marrakesh is a delight, especially on foot, thanks to its compact layout. Choosing central accommodation, preferably within the Medina as we mentioned in the previous point, places the main attractions just a few steps away, allowing you to save both time and transportation costs.
Additionally, it is useful to keep in mind these tips for traveling to Marrakesh: when walking through the Medina, always keep your belongings secure and be aware of potential pickpockets in crowded areas.
Although the city has public transportation, it can be somewhat confusing for visitors, increasing the possibility of getting lost. The taxi, on the other hand, is a widely used means of transportation in Marrakech. However, it is important to take precautions, such as verifying that the meter is on or agreeing on the price of the trip beforehand to avoid surprises.

We advise against renting vehicles for getting around Marrakech, given the chaotic traffic and narrow streets, in addition to the traffic restrictions in the Medina. For excursions outside the city, it is best to opt for organized tours; there is a wide variety available, even with English-speaking guides to enrich your experience.
From Marrakesh Menara International Airport to the center, a private transfer turns out to be the most convenient option:
- A driver will meet you carrying a sign with your name.
- There is no worry about flight delays, as they will wait for your arrival.
- This option is economical, especially for groups.
- They will take you to your Riad, even in areas of the Medina restricted to traffic, helping you with your luggage.
- Thus, you will avoid haggling with taxi drivers upon your arrival in the country.
- This service can be booked through us via this link.
For those looking for alternatives, the bus is a more economical optionfrom the airport to the center, with specific lines that offer this service. Although less comfortable and with limited space for luggage, it is viable and practical.
In case you opt for a taxi, it is recommended to go directly to the official stand and use the price board as a reference to negotiate a fixed cost, given that many drivers refuse to use the meter.
Stay Calm and Enjoy Marrakech
In the face of the initial concern you might feel when planning your trip, we want to share our experience: we found Marrakesh to be a remarkably safe city. Although we stayed within tourist areas and were cautious, especially at night due to traveling with our daughters, our stay was peaceful and without incident.
The vibrant intensity of Marrakesh, although it may seem chaotic, never compromised our safety. Following the valuable advice received upon arriving at our Riad, our experience was smooth and without any hitches. Here are some key points for a safe visit:
- Avoid following strangers who offer to guide you through the city in crowded areas; often, you will end up in a shop or facing an uncomfortable situation.
- Be cautious with taxi drivers who do not use a meter or refuse to agree on a fixed price before starting the trip. If your destination is far, ask your accommodation for an estimated price or a trusted service.
- Beware of unofficial guides; many have agreements with certain businesses and could take you to places with the intention of receiving a commission.
- Haggle with confidence in the markets, starting by offering 50% less than the initial price. It is part of the local experience and culture.

Despite the reputation for persistence that some vendors may have, we never felt overwhelmed. Maintaining a positive attitude and a smile is the best strategy if you feel pressured. Remember, hospitality and safety in Marrakesh are priorities, largely because tourism is a vital source of income for the city and the country. The severity of penalties for crimes also plays a crucial role in maintaining this safe environment.
Therefore, don’t let fear overshadow your adventure. Marrakesh awaits you with its unique warmth and spontaneity. Enjoy every moment, opening yourself to the rich culture and unforgettable experiences it offers.
Discover the Flavors of Marrakech
Moroccan gastronomy is a feast for the senses, rich in flavors and aromas. Dishes like couscous, tajine, harira, and pastilla, slow-cooked with typical spices, are essential for understanding and enjoying the local culture.
Fortunately, the tourist popularity of Marrakesh has led to a wide variety of excellent restaurants that offer these culinary delights at very accessible prices. To make the most of your gastronomic experience, consider these tips for traveling to Marrakech: try typical dishes in recommended local restaurants and stay hydrated by drinking bottled water.
For those with dietary restrictions as is our case, Marrakech also offers solutions. It is advisable to research and book in advance in establishments that suit your dietary needs, thus avoiding last-minute searches and the stress that comes with them.

Although street stalls represent an economical and authentic alternative for eating, we chose to avoid them due to the risk of cross-contamination, which is especially important for people with gluten sensitivity.
However, if you decide to explore the many stalls available, remember the importance of hand hygiene to prevent health problems that could interfere with your enjoyment of the city.

Mastering the Art of Haggling in Marrakech
Haggling is not just a commercial transaction in Marrakech; it is an essential part of the local culture and a practice that can be as entertaining as it is profitable. If you are not accustomed to haggling, the first attempts may seem intimidating. However, with some tips under your belt, you will soon discover the pleasure of negotiating like a local:
- Adopt a friendly but firm attitude: Maintain good humor and firmness; this can help you get real bargains.
- Don’t be afraid to offer less: Starting the negotiation by offering 50% less than the initial price is a common and accepted practice. Consider this the beginning of a friendly and fun dialogue.
- Respect the work of the sellers: Although it is vital to be firm in the negotiation, remember to appreciate the value of artisanal products. Sellers won’t make a sale if it means losing money, so always maintain a balance between respect for their work and your intention to get a fair price.
- Practice makes perfect: Haggling is an art that is perfected with practice. Do not hesitate to immerse yourself in this unique cultural experience.

Avoid Tap Water in Marrakesh
In Morocco, it is crucial to ensure that any water you consume comes from a sealed bottle. This includes being careful with ice in drinks, the water used to wash fruit for juices, and the water you use for your oral hygiene.

Our digestive systems are not accustomed to this type of water, and we prefer to prevent typical traveler stomach discomfort by opting for bottled water.
It is a small but important precaution that can make a big difference in your travel experience.
Practical Tips for Currency Exchange in Marrakesh
The official currency in Marrakech is the Moroccan dirham, with an approximate exchange rate of 10 dirhams per euro. Although card payment has become widespread in hotels and restaurants, you will find that in many shops in the souks, cash is still indispensable. To avoid unforeseen events, we recommend withdrawing money from ATMs at the airport or in the city upon arrival.
An important note: exchange locations at the airport usually apply higher commissions. However, ATMs are a safe and accessible option to get cash as soon as you arrive.
Here are a couple of additional tips on currency exchange:
- Request small bills: It is better to have varied bills for minor expenses; it is more practical.
- The Euro is widely accepted: In Marrakesh, many establishments accept euros, given the fluctuation of the dirham and the high presence of European tourists. It can be an alternative in specific situations where you don’t have dirhams.
For international payments, consider cards like Revolut and N26, which do not charge commissions and are ideal for travelers. If you still don’t have any of these options, it is definitely worth exploring them for your trip. We have both and they are wonderful for traveling.
Economical Options for Mobile Data in Marrakesh
When traveling to Marrakesh, it is common to find that mobile operators charge higher rates for data and calls. On our recent visit, we discovered two profitable alternatives to stay connected without exceeding the budget:
- Holafly: This eSIM offers unlimited data and 4G coverage for a specific period from the moment of your arrival. We purchased it beforehand to ensure we were connected from the first minute, using the local Orange network in Marrakech. It is a practical solution to avoid excessive costs and start using your mobile immediately. If you click on the link you will get a 5% discount. We advise you to check the list of mobile phones compatible with the eSIM.
- Maroc Telecom: Upon arrival, we visited a shop of this local operator located at the airport and purchased a physical SIM card. The installation by the clerks was quick and simple, allowing us to share data with our daughters so they could also use their phones without problems.
Both options are excellent for staying in touch and facilitating navigation around the city, especially useful with applications like Google Maps, which will help you find your way through the complex alleyways of the Medina.

Explore the Iconic Jemaa el-Fna Square
TheJemaa el-Fna Squareis, without a doubt, the pulsating heart of Marrakesh, an epicenter of constant activity with its unique mix of restaurants, cafes, market stalls, and much more.

To ensure your experience is unforgettable for the right reasons, we offer you some essential tips:
- Safety first: As in any large tourist city, it is crucial to pay attention to your belongings. Make sure to keep bags and backpacks closed and in sight at all times.
- Responsible tourism: We recommend avoiding taking photos with snake charmers and other animals, practices questionable from the point of view of animal welfare.
- Avoid giving money to children: Although it may seem like a help, it often contributes to perpetuating cycles of dependency and exploitation.
- Safe henna tattoos: If you are interested in a henna tattoo, opt for recommended places with safe products and hygienic practices. Although tattoos in Jemma el-Fna Square may be cheaper, we were warned about the use of dangerous chemical products. In our experience, Henna Art Café offered us exceptional service, guaranteeing both quality and safety.
How to Navigate Airport Procedures Effectively Upon Arriving in Marrakech
Arrival in Marrakech by air marks your first interaction with the administrative procedures of Morocco. The process begins as soon as you join the queue for passport control, where you are required to complete a digitized form filled out by border control agents. This form will include essential information such as your name, address, occupation, and the reason for your trip.
It is crucial to remember that the boarding pass for your return flight needs to be printed on paper. In case you need to print your boarding pass at the airport, keep in mind that a fee will be charged for this service (around €50 per person).
Likewise, keep in mind that, in many airports, including Marrakech, men and women form separate lines at security checkpoints. Additionally, it is a requirement to go through the counter of your airline, even if you do not have luggage to check in, so that they stamp your boarding pass.
